  90. I want to thank Ron Grant, GXR Systems in Vancouver, for helping me out
  91. with the assign.sys format for GDOS to run on a TT with a TTM195.
  92.  
  93. The trick is to put 08p screen.sys to 10p screen.sys lines in,
  94. along with the fonts for the 04p screen.sys driver. Thank goodness that
  95. there are users out there who can help.

  115. I can not believe that in the nineties there are STILL people who want
  116. hardware to provide anything but the bare essentials.

  118. Hardware sprites are just crap.  How many do you want?  16 enough?  256?
  119. and how shall you allocate them to processes?  They would be just another
  120. pain-in-the-neck limited resource.  But faster you say?  Maybe in the old
  121. days of 8-bit computers they were worthwhile:  when the processors were
  122. slow and the graphics was poor quality anyway.

  125. EVERY game every made would use the mouse pointer as a sprite, sending

  131. ps. Why do we whinge so much about our machines?  From the crap PD stuff
  132. I've seen around, and the crap commercial stuff, Atari users need to
  133. learn a bit of computer science before they cry to the designers about
  134. missing features.  Personally, I think the ST is a fine machine.

  272. Depends on what you know.  If you have a good knowledge of Pascal then I would
  273. recommend 'C for Pascal Programmers'.  Mail me if you want more info on it.

  283. Knowledge of the internals is only necessary if you want to do some low level
  284. programming.

  286. C is fairly easy to learn from Pascal, the 2 being very similar (names vary
  287. and the symbols change, but there isn't that much difference).  The above
  288. book is what I used to learn C, and I have to know it for University.  C does
  289. have a few things Pascal doesn't (like bit level manipulation, and some
  290. intelligence) but thats about it.

  298. Most come without any editor, and those that do can usually be used with any
  299. editor you want.  I use First Word Plus because I'm used to it and like it.

  304. This will depend upon what you buy.  Many don't come with a shell, though some
  305. do.  My own choice is either Mupfel (from Gemini) or Gulam if you've got the
  306. disk space to spare (the one I'm using is only about 70 Kb, which is all I've
  307. got to put it in!).  Basically any shell you want will do.

  312. Some versions are recommended for use with hard drives, though you can use
  313. most of them from floppy.  Having said that you will probably require at least

  344. I use CBREEZE with Mark Williams C.  With a windows-based computer it's
  345. almost ridiculous to have to battle it out with VI or emacs.  Sure, a
  346. gem based editor won't be available on other platforms, but if you know
  347. an editor on those other platforms then what's the problem?  CBREEZE
  348. isn't a hard learn (move cursor up, move cursor down, use mouse to move
  349. scroll bars, no [ESC] 9 L here!) and it comes with a customizer for
  350. Mark Williams so you can link, compile and pass parameters to the MWC
  351. compiler directly from the menu bar.  The docs say you can even
  352. customize it for other compilers (GCC, Sobozon) but I haven't tried it
  353. since I gave up on GCC.  CBREEZE is a Michtron product, and they've
  354. moved so I can't give you an address.  However, it's still advertized in
  355. ST mags so I'm sure you can find it.

  369. Having grown out of my good old ST, I am now trying to decide whether to
  370. buy a Mega STE or a TT. I am gravitating towards the Mega STE, but I am
  371. still undecided. Hence, I would be grateful for helpful comments on the
  372. performance and the software compatibility of the new machine. As far as
  373. I know there are not yet any AT hardware emulators for the Mega STE - is
  374. this correct, and if so, does anyone know when to expect one? And then I
  375. am interested in your opinion on multisync monitors: are they worth the
  376. money and do they make life more difficult for software? Thanks for your

  401. it would be nice to have an internal ( or cartridge based ) time mechanism
  402. to keep track of the time. All my files and things have the original
  403. system time on them and it would just be nice to know WHAT time it actually
  404. is when I'm on the system. My first question:

  483. My friend managed to get his external Supra HD connected to his TT
  484. (which has an internal SCSI device).  The TT differentiates between
  485. SCSI and ASCI devices.  The internal drive is set at SCSI 0, so my
  486. friend set his Supra at SCSI 1, so they would not confict.  This
  487. turned out to be the problem.  BOTH drives had to be set to SCSI 0
  488. to work.  Extremely weird.  Anyone have an explination?

  606. you say????  Also, while I have your attention, that yes, we have
  607. a complete set.  We get them all.  We do it in a way that passes each
